## From Self-Directed Tools to Outside Help

The previous lesson ended on an honest note: recovery routines, breath awareness, and meditation are real supports, and they have limits. When distress keeps returning despite steady self-care, the next step is not more effort. It is another person. This lesson is about spotting that point without panic, and without waiting until things fall apart.

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

- Use three lenses (duration, intensity, daily functioning) to judge whether distress has become persistent
- Explain why daily functioning is often the clearest signal
- Name a sensible first contact and what to bring to that conversation
- Recognize the signs that call for immediate help rather than a scheduled appointment

### Three Lenses: Duration, Intensity, Functioning

A hard week is not the same as persistent distress. Professionals tend to look at three things together, because any one alone can mislead you.

| Lens | What you are noticing | A rough marker (not a diagnosis) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Duration | How long and how often | Most days for more than a couple of weeks |
| Intensity | How loud it feels | 7 or higher out of 10 on many days, or waves that keep returning |
| Functioning | What it interrupts | Sleep, meals, work or study, movement, contact with people |

This map is a thinking aid, not a test you can pass or fail. Its only job is to help you stop debating with yourself.

#### Duration: weeks, not days

## In this lesson

- Intensity: when the volume stays high
- Functioning: the clearest signal
- Signals That Deserve a Mention
- Who to Contact, and What to Bring
- What to Carry Forward
