In the last lesson you wrote things down: a short morning prep, and Seneca's evening review at the end of the day. Writing gives you distance from a thought. This lesson gives you three tools for the moment the thought is still loud: a reframe, a reserve clause, and the view from above. They build directly on the dichotomy of control, so keep that question close at hand: what is up to me, and what is not?

By the end you should be able to:

- Separate a bare event from the judgment you added to it
- Turn an anxious demand into a plan wrapped in a reserve clause
- Use the view from above on a specific, named worry
- Choose the right tool for the right kind of anxiety
- Run any of the three in under five minutes

## The Reframe: The Event Is Not the Alarm

Epictetus opens with a claim that is easy to read and hard to practice: "People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them" (Enchiridion 5). Marcus Aurelius says the same thing from the other direction: if something outside you is causing pain, the pain is not from the thing but from your estimate of it, and that estimate can be revoked (Meditations 8.47, in paraphrase).

So a Stoic reframe is not positive thinking. You do not tell yourself the presentation will go brilliantly. You replace an inflated judgment with an accurate one. Most anxiety comes from a silent sentence that has never been checked: *this must go well or I am finished*. That sentence is a judgment, and judgments can be examined.

A short protocol you can run in two minutes:

1. Write the event in camera language: "I speak to twelve colleagues on Thursday at 10am."
2. Write the judgment underneath it: "If I stumble, they will decide I am incompetent."
3. Mark what is up to you: preparation, pace, honesty, recovery after a slip.
4. Mark what is not: their private opinions, the room's mood, the projector.
5. Rewrite one temperate sentence that is true and still mobilizing.
