Last lesson you built the safety half of solo travel: a written plan left with someone, a check-in contact, and a hard turnaround time. That system only works if your phone is a tool you control. This lesson is about the other half: using the same outing to pull your attention off the screen and train focus, calm and discomfort tolerance.

By the end of this lesson you can:

- Decide which phone functions stay live for safety and which get parked
- Design a phone-light routine for a 2 to 3 hour solo walk and for an overnight camp
- Run three mental drills (focus, calm, discomfort tolerance) without turning the hike into a chore
- Judge honestly whether the routine is working, using signals beyond a screen-time number

## Why the Phone Wins by Default

The trail gives you slow information: a change in wind, a bend in the path, the sound of water. A phone gives fast information, and it promises new information every time you unlock it. So the phone wins by default, not because you are weak, but because it is engineered to interrupt and the trail is not.

The real cost is **attention residue**. You check the map, take a photo, reply to a message, then look up. For the next few minutes part of your mind is still in the message. A walk made of those fragments feels short and forgettable, even though you covered the miles. Last spring a hiker on one of my beginner trips took 41 photos in the first hour, then could not describe a single view at lunch. That is the pattern we are switching off.

> **Important:**
> The phone stays a safety tool. Offline maps, emergency calling and your satellite messenger are never part of the cut. If weather turns, a route is blocked, or someone is hurt, the phone comes out immediately, and no habit on this page outranks that.

## The Phone-Light Kit: What Stays, What Gets Parked

Phone-light does not mean phone-free. It means the phone comes out **on purpose, at planned moments**.
