Last lesson you built a tiny practice routine that fits into your real life. Now meet the thing that will try to break it: perfectionism. The good news is that finishing an ugly, messy, half-decent thing teaches you more than a perfect piece you never finish. Let's make that a skill, not a mood.

By the end of this lesson you can:

- Name the three perfectionist stalls that stop most beginners
- Set a time-box so a piece has a hard finish line
- Make a deliberately rough first draft on purpose
- Mark a piece "finished" using a simple checklist

## Spotting the Stall Before It Eats Your Week

Perfectionism rarely announces itself. It dresses up as "being thorough." Here are the three stalls I see most in beginner classes:

| Stall | What it sounds like | What actually happens |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The restart loop | "This one's ruined, I'll start over" | Nothing gets past bar four or the first sketch line |
| The tool hunt | "I need a better pencil / app / pedal first" | Shopping replaces playing |
| The endless edit | "One more pass and it's done" | The piece never gets a finish line |

All three share one cause: **there is no defined moment called "done."** So the piece stays open forever, and open pieces feel heavy.

That is why you need a finish line you can see. Not a feeling. A rule.

> **Note:**
> Struggling with a piece is not a sign you lack talent. It is a sign you have not yet decided what "finished" means for it.

**Try it now (3 minutes).** Get a piece of paper. Draw three columns: *Restart*, *Tool hunt*, *Endless edit*. Under each, write one sentence describing how that stall showed up the last time you made something. Out loud, say: "That is a stall, not a standard."

Guidance: if you cannot fill a column, you have probably already beaten that one. Circle the stall that feels most familiar. That is the one your finish line needs to guard against.
