## Module 1: Memory Foundations and the Rereading Trap

### 1.1 The three-stage loop

    Encode["📥
Encoding"] --> Store["🗄️
Storage"]
    Store --> Retrieve["🔎
Retrieval"]
    Retrieve -. "re-encodes, strengthens" .-> Store
```
| Stage | What happens | What can fail | What helps |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Encoding | New info is turned into a usable trace | Shallow processing, no attention | Meaning, examples, connect to prior knowledge |
| Storage | Trace is held over time | Decay, interference | Spacing, sleep, rest |
| Retrieval | Trace is pulled back into mind | Cue mismatch, weak trace | Active recall, varied cues |
Key idea: memory is not a recording. Each retrieval re-encodes the trace, so retrieval is both a test and a training event.
### 1.2 Fluency illusion vs active recall
| | Rereading (passive) | Active recall (retrieval) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Feels like | Easy, smooth, "I know this" | Effortful, sometimes uncomfortable |
| Immediate test | Looks good | Looks harder |
| Delayed test | Weak | Strong |
| Feedback | Familiarity, not knowledge | Reveals actual gaps |
> **Warning:**
> Familiarity is not the same as retrievability. Rereading raises the feeling of knowing without reliably raising the ability to produce the answer later.
Fix: close the book and write or say the answer from memory, then check.
### 1.3 Desirable difficulty
Effortful, successful retrieval sticks better than easy review. The difficulty must be productive (you can still get it right, or right with a hint), not overwhelming.
| Difficulty is desirable when... | Difficulty is undesirable when... |
| --- | --- |
| You must work to recall, then succeed | You cannot recall even with effort |
| You get corrective feedback soon after | You practice errors with no feedback |
| The task targets the real test format | The task is unrelated busywork |
