## Why Boundaries Come After Repair

In lesson 3.1 you learned to disagree without damage and to repair fast: name the impact, own your part, restate the relationship. That skill is the foundation for today. A boundary stated cleanly lands far better when the other person already trusts that you are not attacking them. This lesson adds the second half of that equation: keeping your word, consistently, over time.

By the end you should be able to:

- Describe a boundary as something you do, not something you demand
- Say a boundary out loud in one sentence, without a paragraph of justification
- Hold that sentence calmly through the four common kinds of pushback
- Build trust through small, repeated follow-through rather than grand promises

## A Boundary Is a Promise About Your Own Behavior

Most people confuse three different things:

| What you say | What it actually is |
| --- | --- |
| "You have to stop messaging me at night." | A demand. It controls the other person. |
| "I'm usually pretty tired by then..." | A hint. It asks them to guess. |
| "I don't answer messages after 9pm. I'll reply first thing in the morning." | A boundary. It states what *you* will do. |

The third version is the only one you can actually guarantee. You cannot control when a colleague sends a message. You can control when you answer. This is why a boundary is also a form of self-respect: it keeps you from promising something you will resent later.

> **Note:**
> A boundary is not a punishment, an ultimatum, or a way to win. It is information about how you will participate.

**Practice 1.** Rewrite each vague line as a one-sentence boundary. Say what *you* will do.

1. "It really bothers me when you bring up my ex at dinner."
2. "You always dump the whole project on me on Friday afternoon."
3. "I can never get a word in when you call."

## Saying It in One Sentence

Use this pattern:

> When [situation], I [what I will do].
