## What you will achieve

By the end of this course, you will be able to hold a conversation that leaves the other person feeling heard. That is the core skill, and everything else builds on it.

Concretely, you will be able to:

- Stay present in a conversation instead of rehearsing your reply while the other person is still talking.
- Ask open-ended questions that invite people to say more, rather than closed questions that end the exchange.
- Paraphrase and summarize what someone said so they can confirm you understood, or correct you before a misunderstanding grows.
- Notice nonverbal signals (body, tone, pacing) in yourself and others, and spot the moment when words and tone do not match.
- Turn a hint into a clear request that another person can actually act on.
- Give feedback that lands as useful rather than as an attack.
- Disagree respectfully, and repair a conversation quickly when it goes wrong.
- Set a boundary and keep it, then build trust by following through on what you promised.
- Choose between a digital message and a face-to-face conversation, and know why the choice matters.

These are small, learnable behaviors. The course is built around the idea that a slight change in wording or a few extra seconds of silence can transform a difficult interaction.

## Who this course is for

This is a beginner course. No prior training in communication, psychology, or mediation is assumed. There are no prerequisites.

It suits you if:

- You want practical fundamentals you can use the same day, in work meetings, family conversations, or friendships.
- You have noticed conversations going sideways and want a clearer sense of why, and what to do differently.
- You are comfortable with realistic example dialogues and short role-play style exercises.

You do not need to be outgoing or naturally "good with people". The skills here are concrete and practiced, not personality traits.

## Course roadmap

The course runs in three modules.

**Module 1: Listening Foundations**

- **1.1 Active Listening and Presence.** What it means to actually be present, and the habits that pull your attention away.
- **1.2 Open-Ended Questions That Open Conversation.** How question shape changes the direction and depth of a conversation.
- **1.3 Reflective Paraphrasing and Summarizing.** How to reflect back what you heard so the other person can confirm or correct it.
- **1.4 Checkpoint: Listening Foundations.** A short check on the listening skills from this module.

**Module 2: Nonverbal Signals and Clear Messages**

- **2.1 Nonverbal Awareness: Body, Tone, and Mismatch.** Reading signals, and what to do when words and tone disagree.
- **2.2 Clear Requests Instead of Hints.** Why hints fail, and how to phrase a request someone can act on.
- **2.3 Constructive Feedback That Lands.** Structuring feedback so it is heard as help rather than criticism.
- **2.4 Checkpoint: Nonverbal Signals and Clear Messages.** A short check on nonverbal awareness, requests, and feedback.

**Module 3: Disagreement, Boundaries, and Trust**

- **3.1 Respectful Disagreement and Quick Repair.** Disagreeing without damaging the relationship, and repairing fast when you slip.
- **3.2 Boundaries, Follow-Through, and Trust.** Setting boundaries and building trust through consistent follow-through.
- **3.3 Digital or Face-to-Face: Choosing the Channel.** When a message is enough, and when the conversation needs to be in person.
- **3.4 Checkpoint: Disagreement, Boundaries, and Trust.** A short check on the final module.

## How the course works

The course has 12 lessons and takes roughly **270 minutes** in total, about 20 to 25 minutes per lesson. You can work through it in a few longer sittings or spread it across a couple of weeks.

Each lesson follows a short, practical rhythm:

- **Short explanation.** The core idea in plain language, with a realistic example conversation.
- **Guided exercise.** A prompt to try the skill yourself, often through role-play, rewriting a line, or reflecting on a recent conversation.
- **Gentle feedback.** Notes on what a strong attempt looks like, so you can compare your own try against it.

Each module closes with a **checkpoint quiz**. These are low-stakes: they show you whether the skills have settled, and point back to the lesson if something needs another look. There are no grades and no large final project. The "project" here is your own next real conversation.

**How to use it:** the course is designed to be taken in order. Module 1 builds the listening base that Modules 2 and 3 rely on, so start at 1.1 and work forward. If you already feel confident in a specific area, you can skim that lesson, but doing the guided exercises is where most of the learning happens. Reading about active listening is easy; practicing it for two minutes is what changes how you show up in the next conversation.

If you are ready, open Lesson 1.1 and bring a recent conversation to mind.
