Last lesson you learned to spot red flags early, the patterns that show a relationship is not safe to invest in. This lesson covers the harder middle ground: the fights that are not red flags, just two people with different needs bumping into each other. Most couples never stop arguing about the same three things. The ones who last are not the ones who avoid conflict, they are the ones who get fast at repair.

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

- Separate the *issue* from the *process* in a fight
- Run a short de-escalation script when a conversation gets hot
- Use a four-beat repair script with phrases you can copy
- Decide honestly between repairing and ending
- Plan a breakup conversation that is clear, kind, and final

## What the fight is really about

A client I will call Maya came in furious about dishes. Twenty minutes in, the dishes disappeared and the real sentence came out: "I feel like I'm raising this household alone." The dishes were the issue. The loneliness was the thing.

Every conflict has two layers:

| Layer | What it is | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The issue | The concrete topic | Who does the dishes |
| The process | How you talk about it | Raised voice, eye-rolling, walking out |

You cannot always solve the issue. You can almost always improve the process. Watch for these process failures: contempt (mockery, eye-rolling), stonewalling (shutting down), character attacks ("you're so selfish"), and turning every complaint into a defense. When those show up, stop working on the dishes and work on the process.

> **Tip:**
> A fight is not proof the relationship is broken. It is a signal that a need is unmet and nobody has said it plainly yet.

**Try it now.** Rewrite this character attack as an issue statement: *"You never listen, you're so selfish."*

## The de-escalation script

Jordan and Sam used to have their worst fights at 11pm, both tired, both escalating. Nothing useful happens after midnight. Here is the script that changed it.

## In this lesson

- Deciding to end it, and saying it cleanly
