## Module 1: Where the Inner Critic Comes From

### 1.1 Past Experiences and the Self-Image They Leave

Self-image is a **learned story**, not a fixed fact. Early and repeated experiences leave conclusions about the self that get carried forward.

| Experience type | Common self-conclusion | What it actually was |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Repeated criticism | "I am never good enough" | One person's opinion, repeated |
| Conditional praise ("you're smart when...") | "My worth is performance-based" | A reward pattern, not a truth about you |
| Being overlooked or dismissed | "I don't matter" | A gap in attention, not a verdict |
| High expectations with little support | "I must do it alone and perfectly" | An unmet need for help |

Key idea: the conclusion feels like identity, but it is a **generalization from limited data**.

> **Note:**
> You are not required to relitigate the past to notice its pattern. The goal is to see the story, not to relive it.
