## From Reading the Room to Running It

In the last two lessons you learned to read context (high versus low) and to adapt etiquette and politeness signals. This lesson turns that reading into action: you chair the meeting, you give the feedback, you write the message. Same skill, higher stakes, because now other people are waiting on your words.

By the end of this lesson you can:

- Plan a meeting that works across time zones and talking styles
- Use turn-taking moves so quieter participants actually get heard
- Choose direct or softened feedback, then check that it landed
- Rewrite blunt or vague messages into clear, warm international English

## Chairing a Cross-Border Meeting

_____ colleagues often treat a meeting as the place where relationships and consensus get confirmed, with the real decision happening before or after. Low-context colleagues usually treat the meeting as the place where the decision gets made. Chair a mixed group without saying which kind of meeting this is, and half the room prepares for a debate while the other half prepares to nod.

Three habits fix most of this.

**Send the purpose, not just the invitation.** An agenda _____ ahead with three lines: the decision needed, who owns each item, and the times in the meeting's time zone. Everyone gets the same document, so nobody has to guess the genre.

**Make turn-taking explicit.** In a mixed room the fastest, most direct speakers fill the silence. Use round-robin ("Ana, then Kenji, then me"), and open a chat channel for written input so people who prefer to compose their thoughts can contribute. Then read the chat aloud.

**Say what silence means.** "If nobody objects by Friday, we go with option B" is a clear rule. Without it, silence is agreement in one culture and polite discomfort in another.
