You have spent this module learning to listen so others can correct you and to take another person's perspective without mind-reading. Both skills assume something uncomfortable: that disagreement is normal and repair is possible. This lesson shows you how to open a hard conversation without attacking, say what you need without blame, and close with a concrete agreement.

By the end you will be able to:

- Open a disagreement with a soft start instead of an accusation
- Turn complaints into specific needs and requests
- Recognize the four habits that escalate conflict and swap them for alternatives
- Run a repair conversation with a clear closing agreement

> **Note:**
> Recall from earlier: a feeling is your internal state ("I felt dismissed"), while an interpretation is a story about the other person's intent ("you were trying to shut me down"). You cannot observe intent. Keep that distinction close, because most conflict fuel is interpretation dressed as fact.

## Opening a Hard Conversation Without an Attack

Most conflicts are lost in the first thirty seconds, not the middle. A **soft start** names the situation, your feeling, and your need, then invites a response. A **hard start** begins with blame, absolutes, or character judgment. The other person then defends the accusation rather than addressing the issue.

| Hard start | Soft start |
| --- | --- |
| "You never listen to me." | "I noticed I got cut off twice in that meeting. I felt flat, and I need a chance to finish my thought. Can we talk about how the agenda runs?" |
| "You're being dramatic." | "You sound really frustrated about this. I want to understand what's not working. What's the biggest piece for me?" |
| "This is your fault." | "We ended up double-booked. I want to figure out together where the handoff broke down." |
